4th May - West Looe May Fayre

Picture
The 4th May was the start of the bands 'summer' concert season, performing as part of West Looe's May fayre.

The weather wasn't amazing but the rain held off just about. The band followed the Piccy tree around West Looe to lead the parade playing the now infamous arrangement of 'The Piccy Tree'.

The band then performed a short outdoor concert to an appreciative Looe audience.

The band is now preparing for rehearsals on 'Kingdom of Dragons' by Philip Harper for Bugle contest in June as well as rehearsing a full concert programme for upcoming concerts.

We are still looking for a Euphonium player so if you are anyone you know may be interested please contact us.

New faces

We would like to welcome two new faces to the band, who both made their debut at the area competition in March; Jack Larner on 2nd baritone and Cerys Reading on Tuned percussion and timpani.

Jack Larner
Jack is a student studying engineering at Plymouth University. Jack happened to be in the pub where Chris and Lauren's band 'The Normals' were playing a gig. Jack came and said hello and that was it, in a bit of a drunken blur he was signed up ready to play for the area competition. Jack is into 'fire poi' - we wonder whether this can be incorporated into a future performance?!

Cerys Reading
Cerys is an accomplished Pianist and plans to study music at University later this year. Cerys agreed to help the band at the 2013 Regional Contest on Vibraphone and Timps - something she had never played before but was more than up for the challenge. She excelled and made a real difference to the bands performance and we are pleased to announce that she is staying with the band for our Spring and Summer concert/contest seasons.

Welcome to you both. Great to have you on board!!

10th March - Fond Farewell

We are sad to announce that we have said a fond farewell to our Solo Euphonium player, Rachel Crabb.

Rachel
Rachel is hoping to go to University in September to study Midwifery and is studying an intense foundation course this year. This meant that Rachel was finding it hard to fit studying, working two jobs and travelling to band in her busy schedule, and although it was a hard decision she decided that her studies (rightfully!) had to come first and told the band that the area contest would be her last outing with the band.

Rachel is one of the longest standing members of the band having played in the band for 15 years, since she was 6. During this time Rachel has been the perfect bandsman and an active committee member assisting with the running of the band.
During her time on Solo Euphonium Rachel has been featured as a soloist on many occasions at concerts and contests and has played a huge part in the band's recent successes. We would like to say a BIG thank you for everything that Rachel has done for the band and wish her good luck with her studies and for the future!

So if you are a Euphonium player looking for a band or know anyone that is, please
get in touch!

9th March - West of England Regional Championships

5th place and promotion to the 1st section from 2014!

Leaving at 6am the band travelled up to Torquay to take part in the second section West of England Regional Championships. The set test piece for this year was 'The Plantagenets' by Edward Gregson. It was deemed to be a very difficult piece for second section bands to try and master. Rehearsals started to come together a couple of weeks before the contest and the band was hoping to put in a good performance on the day.

The band was drawn to play 5th out of the strong field of the 16 bands competing in the second section. After a final morning rehearsal the band took to the stage to give our performance of The Plantagenets. It went well and the band was happy with the performance. After some time in the pub whilst the rest of the bands in the section played, it was time for the results.
St Pinnock were awarded 5th place which we were happy with. The adjudicators, Nick Grace and David Thornton praised the band for our efforts, complimenting the interpretation of the piece and stating that there was "lots of quality" and that it was "a good, committed performance" which was "enjoyable".
As a result of this placing and our previous two area performances, St Pinnock are promoted to the 1st section from 2014.

Congratulations to Swindon Pegasus and Pendennis Brass who came 1st and 2nd. Good luck at the Nationals in September.

The full results and write up from 4barsrest can be seen here.
